Ask Solace
Mum's house was in both her and Dad's names. Do we still need probate?
It depends how the property was held. If it was owned as joint tenants, it usually passes to the surviving owner outside the estate. If it was held as tenants in common, her share forms part of the estate and probate is often needed.
I can check the title register with HM Land Registry for you — shall I?

How we help
From registering the death to the final distribution, you always know what's been done, what's next, and exactly what each step needs from you.
Weeks of hold music, forms and letter-chasing, handled for you — at a point in life when your attention belongs somewhere else entirely.
Dormant accounts, forgotten policies, small pensions and outstanding debts — surfaced, so the estate is settled on a complete picture rather than a partial one.
Every notification, reply and document is logged and dated, so there's an orderly account of how the estate was administered — for the beneficiaries, for your own records, and for a solicitor if one is involved.
We work alongside regulated solicitors and bereavement support organisations. When something calls for a professional, or for a human conversation, we'll put you in good hands.
FAQs
Solace handles the administration that follows a death. We build you a checklist for the estate in front of you, help you find and value the assets and debts, keep every document in one place, and use AI agents to write to and chase the banks, pension providers, utilities and government departments involved. You stay in control and approve anything that matters.
No. Solace is a technology company, not a firm of solicitors, and we are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. We provide information, structure, document handling and automation — we do not provide legal, tax or financial advice, and nothing we produce should be relied on as such. Where a matter needs a professional view, we'll tell you, and we can introduce you to a regulated solicitor.
That's a decision for you, and one worth taking advice on. Many estates are administered by the executor without a solicitor; others clearly need one — disputed or unclear wills, trusts, significant inheritance tax exposure, overseas assets, business interests or family disagreement. Solace handles the administration either way, and works just as happily alongside a solicitor as without one.
No — we're not a counselling or emotional support service, and we won't pretend to be. Our job is to take the administrative weight off you. Where support would help, we can point you towards established bereavement support organisations who do that work properly.
You tell us what you already know. From there, and only with your explicit permission, Solace can read bank statements you upload, search mailboxes you have lawful access to, and write to registries, banks, insurers and pension providers to ask whether the deceased held anything with them. Anything we surface is presented to you for confirmation — we don't act on it by ourselves.
It stays yours. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, held in the UK, and processed in line with UK GDPR. You choose which accounts and mailboxes to connect and can disconnect them at any time. We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with third parties beyond what's needed to administer the estate on your instruction.
The United Kingdom only, for now. Our first release is built around the process in England and Wales. Scotland (where confirmation replaces probate) and Northern Ireland differ in important respects and are on the roadmap — tell us where you are when you request access and we'll be straight with you about what we can help with today.
We're finalising pricing ahead of launch, and it will be a clear fee published up front rather than a percentage of the estate. We're currently onboarding a limited number of estates in early access. Request access, tell us a little about your situation, and we'll come back to you.
Early access
We're working with a limited number of estates while Solace is in early access. Tell us a little about your situation and we'll be in touch.
